Living on the Edge

I recently helped a customer upgrade from the original BusinessObjects Edge Series (XI R2 vintage) to BusinessObjects Edge Series 3.0 and integrate with Active Directory. Overall, it was a good experience, but there were some lessons learned that I hope to share shortly when I get some additional time to write.

We were hoping to move to Edge Series 3.1, but it still doesn’t have an official release date beyond “sometime in Q1 2009”. Not quite sure what takes so long between releases of Enterprise and Edge, since the differences are primarily different installation scripts and license restrictions.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if later this quarter SAP surprised everyone by shipping mid-market customers Edge Series 3.2 instead, delighting their mid-market customers with new features and giving their enterprise customers something to wait and drool over?

Are you a mid-market company using Edge Series? I’d love to hear how you are using it to transform your small or mid-sized organization. Feel free to post a comment.

  1. We are a small Cell phone company who just started with Business Objects in September. We are on Crystal Decision. We have the upgrade for Edge to 3.0, but have not done it yet. We are self learning a lot as we start using it for more and more reporting.
